Overview
Voltvyrm is an optional Act 2 boss in Hollow Knight: Silksong, lurking inside the Voltnest at the top of the Sands of Karak. This electric wyrm-like creature unleashes devastating voltage-based attacks in a compact arena, making it one of the more mechanically intense optional fights in Act 2. The journey to reach Voltvyrm is itself a challenge, requiring precise platforming through spike-filled passages.

How to Reach Voltvyrm
Voltvyrm is hidden inside the Voltnest, a subarea at the top of Sands of Karak:
- Navigate to the upper sections of the Sands of Karak
- Look for a hidden opening — you'll need to be shot directly into it via a launcher mechanism
- Once inside, pogo over spikes carefully
- Climb up the wall to reach the Voltnest subarea
- Voltvyrm's arena is within
The path to Voltvyrm requires confident platforming. If you're struggling with the spikes, equip tools that help with movement before entering.
Attack Patterns
Lightning Bolt
Voltvyrm fires a bolt of electricity in a straight line. The bolt is telegraphed by a brief flash along its path. Dash perpendicular to the bolt's direction. The hitbox is narrow but fast.
Chain Lightning
A multi-target electrical discharge that arcs between the arena walls. The arcs create a web of electricity that you need to weave through. Stay in the gaps between the arcs — they have consistent spacing.
Volt Coil
Voltvyrm wraps itself in electrical energy and charges across the arena in a spiraling pattern. The spiral is predictable once you see the initial direction. Move to the center or edge of the arena depending on the spiral's path.
Static Field
Voltvyrm generates an electric field on sections of the arena floor. The affected areas crackle with visible sparks before becoming dangerous. Stay airborne or move to unaffected areas. The field shifts positions periodically.
Thunder Crash (Phase 2)
In Phase 2, Voltvyrm launches itself at the ceiling and crashes down, sending electrical shockwaves across the floor in both directions. Double jump over the shockwaves and prepare for the follow-up Chain Lightning that comes shortly after.
Overcharge (Phase 2)
Voltvyrm supercharges the entire arena with intermittent pulses of electricity. Between pulses, there are safe windows to attack. The rhythm is consistent — learn the timing and attack between pulses.
Battle Strategy
The Compact Arena
The Voltnest arena is smaller than most boss arenas in Silksong, which makes dodging more challenging. Every movement matters. Practice economical dodging — small dashes and precise jumps rather than panicked running.
Aerial Advantage
Many of Voltvyrm's attacks target the ground — Static Field, shockwaves, and floor-based arcs. Staying airborne as much as possible gives you safety from roughly half its moveset. Use pogo bounces off Voltvyrm itself to maintain height.
Phase 2: Rhythm Game
The Overcharge mechanic turns Phase 2 into a rhythm game. The pulses come at regular intervals. Attack between pulses, dodge during them. Once you find the rhythm, Phase 2 is actually more predictable than Phase 1 despite being more dangerous.
Tool-Based Damage
Given the small arena and frequent need to dodge, passive damage tools are extremely valuable. Deploy them and focus on survival while they chip away at Voltvyrm's health.
Recommended Build
Tools
- Voltvessels — Ironically effective; electrical tools still work against Voltvyrm
- Cogflies — Auto-tracking passive damage; deploy and focus on dodging
- Sharpdart — Emergency phase-through for tight situations in the small arena
- Warding Bell — Critical for surviving Chain Lightning combos
Crests
- Wanderer's Crest — Fast attacks maximize the brief safe windows between Overcharge pulses
- Witch Crest — Silk Bind from range keeps you safer
Silk Skills
- Pale Nails — Ranged damage is invaluable in a compact arena
- Thread Storm — Area coverage in a small space means near-guaranteed hits
Pro Tips
- The arena is small — every dodge should be precise and minimal
- Stay airborne to avoid ground-based electrical attacks
- Learn the Overcharge rhythm in Phase 2; it's the key to the whole fight
- Passive damage tools (Cogflies) let you focus on survival
- Chain Lightning arcs have consistent gaps; don't panic, find the safe spots
- The path to the Voltnest requires good platforming — practice before committing
- Static Field has visible spark warnings before activating; watch the ground
Rewards
Defeating Voltvyrm grants electrical crafting materials and contributes to the Hunter's Journal. The Voltnest may also contain additional hidden items accessible after the fight.
Wrapping Up
Voltvyrm is a compact, intense fight that demands precision in a small space. Master the ground-based dodge patterns, stay airborne, and learn the Overcharge rhythm to crack this electric beast. It's a fight that looks chaotic but follows strict patterns — once you see them, you'll wonder how it ever felt overwhelming.
Discharge complete, Hunter. The Voltnest is yours.
