The Cradle in Hollow Knight Silksong

Overview

The Cradle is the climactic final area of Act 2 in Hollow Knight: Silksong, located at the very pinnacle of the Citadel of Song. This sacred, ethereal chamber is where Hornet's journey through the Citadel reaches its conclusion — and where the fate of Pharloom hangs in the balance. The Cradle hosts two of the game's most important encounters: a dramatic rematch with Lace and the confrontation with the Final Boss. Crucially, The Cradle is also where the choice between the standard ending and the true ending is made.

Area Characteristics

  • Ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere distinct from the rest of the Citadel
  • Sacred architecture with silk and light motifs
  • Home to the Lace rematch (second encounter)
  • Final Boss arena for Act 2
  • Multiple ending triggers based on player actions
  • Requires all three melodies from the Threefold Melody quest
  • The Cradle Map costs 70 Rosaries from a machine in the area

How to Reach The Cradle

The Cradle is the final destination of the Threefold Melody quest, accessible only after collecting all three melodies.

Prerequisites

  1. Vaultkeeper's Melody — Obtained from the Sacred Cylinder in the Whispering Vaults
  2. Conductor's Melody — Learned from Conductor Ballador in the High Halls
  3. Architect's Melody — Discovered by solving the puzzle in Upper Cogwork Core

Route

  1. After collecting all three melodies, return to the central hub area of the Citadel.
  2. Locate the sealed entrance to The Cradle (above High Halls).
  3. Play the three melodies using the Needolin to unseal the door.
  4. Enter The Cradle.

The Cradle Map

The area map is obtained from a machine in an alcove on the west side of The Cradle. Unlike other maps, this one requires inserting 70 Rosaries into the machine. Given the area's relatively linear layout, the map is optional but helpful for finding secrets.

Key Encounters

Lace — Second Encounter

Before reaching the Final Boss, Hornet faces Lace for the second time. This rematch is significantly more challenging than the first encounter in Deep Docks.

New Attacks (compared to Deep Docks)

  • Enhanced speed on all existing attacks
  • New silk barrier attack creating arena-wide obstacles
  • Aerial combo sequences not seen in the first fight
  • Phase transitions with temporary invulnerability
  • Counter-attack windows are shorter and more punishing

Strategy

  • All patterns from the Deep Docks fight return but are faster; muscle memory helps.
  • Her new silk barriers must be destroyed or avoided — they restrict arena space.
  • Use the Clawline on arena walls for vertical evasion of ground-level attacks.
  • Her aerial combos have specific dodge windows; learn the rhythm.
  • Healing opportunities are rare — use quick heals only when Lace is in transition phases.
  • This fight is demanding but fair; persistence and pattern recognition are key.

After Defeating Lace

Lace's defeat opens the path to the Final Boss chamber. A brief narrative sequence plays, revealing crucial story information about Lace's motivations and her connection to the Citadel.

The Final Boss

The Final Boss of Act 2 awaits in the deepest chamber of The Cradle. This is one of Silksong's most spectacular and challenging encounters.

Note: Specific boss details are kept vague to avoid major spoilers.

General Strategy

  • The fight has multiple phases, each introducing new attack patterns.
  • Environmental elements in the arena play a role — pay attention to the surroundings.
  • All of Hornet's abilities are useful; switch tactics between phases.
  • Patience is more important than aggression — overcommitting is punished severely.
  • The arena is larger than most boss rooms; use the space.

The Two Endings

The Cradle's Final Boss encounter leads to two different endings depending on your actions:

Standard Ending (Act 2 Conclusion)

Defeat the Final Boss normally by depleting their health. This triggers the standard Act 2 ending and credits roll. However, this is not the true ending.

True Ending Path

To achieve the true ending, you must:

  1. Complete the Silk and Soul quest before returning to The Cradle.
  2. Collect all four souls:
    • Seeker's Soul (Bilewater, after defeating Groal the Great)
    • Maiden's Soul (Moss Grotto, hidden chamber)
    • Hermit's Soul (Bellhart, post-restoration)
    • Snare Setter (Weavenest Atla)
  3. Return the souls to the Caretaker in Songclave.
  4. Challenge the Final Boss again in The Cradle.
  5. When the boss is defeated, play the Needolin instead of delivering the killing blow.
  6. This triggers the true Act 2 conclusion and unlocks Act 3 — The Abyss.

Key Items and Collectibles

Rosary Caches

Despite being a late-game area, The Cradle contains several hidden Rosary caches:

  • Behind silk curtains in the approach corridors
  • In alcoves along the Lace arena's upper walls
  • Within the Final Boss chamber's outer edges

Lore Tablets

Critical lore tablets in The Cradle reveal:

  • The true history of the Citadel of Song
  • The nature of the song that binds Pharloom
  • The connection between Hornet and the kingdom
  • Hints about what lies beyond in Act 3

Final Silk Heart

A Silk Heart is hidden in the area between the Lace arena and the Final Boss chamber. This is your last opportunity to increase maximum health before the final fight.

Environmental Features

The Approach

The corridors leading to The Cradle are quiet and contemplative, with no regular enemies. This area features:

  • Silk tapestries depicting Pharloom's history
  • Ambient music building toward the climactic encounters
  • Lore tablets providing final context before the battles ahead
  • A bench (the last save point before the boss encounters)

Lace's Arena

A grand circular chamber with:

  • Clawline-compatible walls for vertical movement
  • Silk curtain decorations (breakable, hiding items)
  • Elevated platforms at the arena edges
  • A dramatic skylight illuminating the center

The Final Chamber

The innermost room of The Cradle:

  • Expansive arena with environmental elements
  • Unique visual design reflecting the boss's nature
  • Multiple height levels and platforms
  • The Needolin interaction point (for the true ending)

Secrets and Hidden Areas

Pre-Battle Meditation Room

Before the Lace encounter, a hidden room off the main corridor contains a meditation point. Resting here fully restores health and silk, and triggers unique dialogue about Hornet's journey.

Along the approach corridors, breakable silk walls reveal a hidden gallery showing visual memories of Hornet's journey through Pharloom. Each display corresponds to a major area visited.

Post-Boss Exploration

After the standard ending, you can return to The Cradle to explore areas that were locked during the boss encounters. These contain additional lore and hint at Act 3's content.

The Cradle's True Purpose

Lore tablets hidden throughout the area reveal that The Cradle was originally built as a nursery for something ancient and powerful — the truth of what was nurtured here is central to Silksong's overarching narrative.

Connections to Other Areas

Accessible From

  • High Halls / Upper Cogwork Core (via the sealed entrance, requires three melodies)
  • Citadel hub (via Ventrica Station, then walking)

Leads To

  • Act 3 — The Abyss (true ending path only)
  • Return to Citadel hub (after standard ending)
  • Credits (both endings)

Tips for The Cradle

  • Save the Silk and Soul quest for before your second Cradle visit — completing it first enables the true ending.
  • Stock up on every healing item available before entering; there are no merchants in The Cradle.
  • The bench before Lace's arena is your last save point — use it.
  • Practice the Needolin between fights; the true ending requires using it at a precise moment.
  • If the standard ending plays, don't worry — you can return to The Cradle after completing the Silk and Soul quest.
  • The Lace rematch is harder than the Final Boss for many players; don't be discouraged.
  • Equip your strongest charms and fully upgraded needle for both encounters.
  • Explore every corridor before engaging the bosses; hidden items here make a meaningful difference.

The Cradle is where Silksong's narrative threads converge into a breathtaking climax. Whether you achieve the standard conclusion or unlock the path to Act 3's deeper mysteries, this sacred chamber at the peak of the Citadel delivers one of gaming's most memorable finales. Steel yourself, play your song, and decide the fate of Pharloom.
