The Citadel of Song is the towering fortress at the peak of Pharloom and the central location of Act 2 in Hollow Knight: Silksong. This colossal structure is Hornet's ultimate destination — the place she has been ascending toward since the beginning of her journey. The Citadel is not a single area but a vast interconnected complex containing multiple distinct sub-regions, each with their own challenges, bosses, and secrets. It is here that the true nature of Pharloom and its rulers begins to unfold.

Citadel Sub-Regions
The Citadel contains several distinct areas, each serving different purposes:
Grand Gate
The imposing entrance to the Citadel. After defeating The Last Judge, you'll enter here and find the lift leading down to the Underworks. The Grand Gate area also contains the first Citadel bench and several lore tablets explaining the fortress's history.
Underworks
The industrial underbelly of the Citadel, filled with pipes, machinery, and maintenance tunnels. Here you'll unlock the first Ventrica Station — the Citadel's fast-travel system that becomes essential for navigating the fortress efficiently.
Choral Chambers
The heart of the Citadel's cultural district. Key objectives include:
- Unlocking the Grand Bellway (major shortcut)
- Meeting Loyal Mergwin to begin the Great Taste of Pharloom sidequest
- Reaching the First Shrine to establish the settlement of Songclave
- Obtaining the White Key from the First Shrine
- Accessing the Pinmaster Shop for the Pale Oil needle upgrade
Cogwork Core (Lower and Upper)
The mechanical center of the Citadel, divided into lower and upper sections:
- Lower Cogwork Core: Defeat the Clockwork Dancers boss to begin the Threefold Melody quest and open a path to the Whispering Vaults.
- Upper Cogwork Core: Solve the Architect's Puzzle to learn the Architect's Melody, one of three melodies needed for progression.
Whispering Vaults
A vast archive of ancient knowledge:
- Meet Vaultkeeper Cardinus to unlock the Psalm Cylinder archive
- Defeat Trobbio boss to unlock the lift to the Cauldron
- Obtain the Clawline ability in the Cauldron
- Purchase the Architect's Key from the Twelfth Architect for the Architect Crest
- Obtain the Sacred Cylinder and learn the Vaultkeeper's Melody
High Halls
The upper levels of the Citadel (see our dedicated High Halls guide for details):
- Fight through The Forum's defenders
- Reach Conductor Ballador
- Learn the Conductor's Melody
Whiteward (Optional)
An optional area within the Citadel:
- Unlock an alternate path to the Cauldron
- Find the Surgeon's Key
- Defeat The Unravelled boss to earn a Silk Heart
The Threefold Melody Quest
The central quest of Act 2 requires collecting three melodies to progress:
- Vaultkeeper's Melody — Obtained from the Sacred Cylinder in the Whispering Vaults
- Conductor's Melody — Learned from Conductor Ballador in the High Halls
- Architect's Melody — Discovered by solving the puzzle in Upper Cogwork Core
All three melodies must be collected to unlock the path to The Cradle and the Act 2 finale.
Key Items and Collectibles
White Key
Obtained at the First Shrine in the Choral Chambers. Required for opening specific locked doors throughout the Citadel.
Clawline Ability
Found in the Cauldron (accessed via the Whispering Vaults). This ability allows Hornet to use claw-based traversal on special surfaces, opening up new movement options.
Needle Strike Ability
If you entered via the Blasted Steps route, you'll have learned this from the Pinstress. Essential for breaking certain barriers within the Citadel.
Pale Oil
Found at the Pinmaster Shop in the Choral Chambers. Used to upgrade Hornet's needle, significantly increasing damage output for the challenging fights ahead.
Architect Crest
Purchased using the Architect's Key from the Twelfth Architect in the Whispering Vaults. Provides significant stat bonuses.
Psalm Cylinders
Collectible lore items scattered throughout the Citadel. The archive in the Whispering Vaults catalogs them all and provides rich backstory about Pharloom's history.
Songclave — The Citadel Hub
Songclave is established at the First Shrine in the Choral Chambers and serves as your home base within the Citadel. It functions similarly to Bone Bottom and Bellhart:
- Rest bench for saving
- NPC merchants and quest-givers
- Wishboard for tracking sidequests
- The Caretaker NPC (crucial for the Silk and Soul quest later)
- Ventrica Station connection for fast travel
Boss Encounters
The Citadel contains multiple boss fights across its sub-regions:
- Clockwork Dancers (Lower Cogwork Core) — A mechanical duo requiring careful timing
- Trobbio (Whispering Vaults) — A vault guardian testing combat mastery
- The Unravelled (Whiteward, optional) — A horrifying creature rewarding a Silk Heart
- Forum Defenders (High Halls) — Elite enemies guarding the path to Ballador
Secrets and Hidden Areas
Ventrica Station Network
Fully unlocking all Ventrica Stations creates a comprehensive fast-travel network. Some stations are hidden behind breakable walls or require specific keys.
The Cauldron
Accessed through the lift unlocked by defeating Trobbio. Contains the Clawline ability and connects to Whiteward via an alternate path.
Hidden Lore Rooms
The Citadel is filled with hidden chambers containing Psalm Cylinders and lore tablets. Check behind ornate tapestries and beneath staircases for breakable walls.
Architect's Secret Passages
Throughout the Cogwork Core, the Twelfth Architect's original blueprints reveal hidden passages marked by specific gear patterns on the walls.

- The Threefold Melody quest can be completed in any order, but the Whispering Vaults route is generally easiest first.
- Upgrade your needle with Pale Oil before tackling the harder boss fights.
- Don't skip Whiteward — the Silk Heart from defeating The Unravelled makes the later fights much more manageable.
- Psalm Cylinders provide crucial lore hints that can help solve puzzles in the Cogwork Core.

Its interconnected regions, layered quests, and challenging encounters represent the game at its finest.
