Overview
The Phantom is a required Act 1 boss in Hollow Knight: Silksong, found at the top of the Exhaust Organ. This spectral boss guards one of the most important rewards in the game — the Cross Stitch ability, which is essential for progression. The Phantom's ethereal nature makes it a unique fight; its attacks are elusive and hard to read, fitting its ghostly theme perfectly.

How to Reach the Phantom
The Phantom is located at the top of the Exhaust Organ, accessible after clearing The Mist:
- Navigate through the Exhaust Organ area — it's located between The Marrow and the upper regions
- Clear The Mist event, which opens the path upward
- Climb to the top of the Exhaust Organ
- The Phantom's arena awaits at the summit
There's a bench nearby — make sure to rest before entering the fight.
Attack Patterns
Phase Dash
The Phantom dashes across the arena while partially invisible. A faint shimmer marks its path. Jump or dash perpendicular to its movement to avoid contact. The dash comes out fast, so react to the shimmer immediately.
Spirit Orbs
The Phantom summons floating orbs that drift toward Hornet. They move slowly but track your position. Destroy them with your Nail while keeping an eye on the Phantom's position, or dodge between them if there are too many.
Vanish Strike
The Phantom disappears completely, then reappears with an attack from an unexpected direction. Watch for a subtle sound cue — a whisper-like noise — that precedes its reappearance. The attack comes from the direction of the audio cue.
Ground Shock
The Phantom slams into the ground, sending a shockwave across the arena floor. Jump to avoid the wave. The shockwave travels the full length of the arena, so vertical positioning is your only escape.
Phantom Clones (Phase 2)
In the second phase, the Phantom creates copies of itself. Only one is real — the others are translucent and deal no damage but can obscure the real Phantom's position. Focus your attacks on the slightly more opaque clone.
Battle Strategy
Reading the Shimmer
The Phantom's core gimmick is visibility — or lack thereof. Many of its attacks involve partial or full invisibility. The key is training your eyes (and ears) to detect the subtle cues:
- Shimmer before Phase Dash
- Whisper before Vanish Strike
- Opacity differences between real and fake clones
Phase 1: Aggressive Approach
In Phase 1, the Phantom has predictable patterns between its visibility tricks. After each dash or vanish attack, there's a window where it becomes fully visible. That's your time to strike. Get in 2-3 hits, then prepare for the next disappearance.
Phase 2: Clone Management
When clones appear, don't waste time attacking fakes. Look for the slightly more opaque Phantom and focus your damage there. Tools like Cogflies are excellent here because they automatically track the real target.
Audio Over Visual
This fight rewards players who listen more than they look. The Phantom's audio cues are more reliable than visual ones, especially during the clone phase. Turn up your volume and learn the sound patterns.

Rewards
Defeating the Phantom grants the Cross Stitch ability, a crucial traversal and combat upgrade that opens up new areas and movement options for the rest of the game. This makes the Phantom one of the most important bosses in Silksong despite appearing in Act 1.
Wrapping Up
The Phantom is a fight about perception — seeing what isn't there and hearing what you can't see. Once you tune into its audio cues and learn to spot the shimmer, the fight clicks into place. Stay patient, let your tracking tools do the work during clone phases, and strike decisively during visibility windows.
The Cross Stitch awaits, Hunter. Pierce through the illusion.
