Overview
Moss Grotto is the very first location in Hollow Knight: Silksong, serving as the game's tutorial area. This lush, plant-filled cavern is where Hornet awakens at the beginning of her journey through Pharloom, lying on the mossy ground after her mysterious arrival. Despite being a tutorial zone, Moss Grotto is rich with secrets and contains areas that can only be fully explored much later in the game, making it worth multiple return visits.

Area Characteristics
- Lush vegetation and bioluminescent moss covering every surface
- Gentle, organic aesthetic with natural cave formations
- Tutorial-focused design teaching basic movement and combat
- Moss-themed enemies serving as introductory encounters
- Multiple hidden passages requiring late-game abilities
- Home to the Moss Mother boss encounter
How to Reach Moss Grotto
Moss Grotto is the starting area of the game — Hornet begins here automatically. After the opening cutscene, you gain control of Hornet on the mossy floor of the cavern.
First Visit
Upon gaining control, head left to begin exploring. You'll immediately encounter your first enemy, a Mossgrub, which teaches you the basics of combat. The area is designed to gradually introduce movement mechanics, platforming, and combat in a safe environment before ramping up the difficulty.
Return Visits
Later in the game, Moss Grotto can be revisited from Bone Bottom or through the Wormways connection. Returning with new abilities opens up previously inaccessible areas, including:
- The Chapel of the Wanderer (accessed via Wormways, yields the Wanderer Crest)
- Hidden chambers requiring the Cling Grip ability
- Berry locations for the Berry Picking quest
- The Maiden's Soul location (required for the Silk and Soul quest in late-game)
Key Items and Collectibles
Silk Heart Fragment
Your first Silk Heart fragment can be found in Moss Grotto by exploring the upper left portion of the area. This increases Hornet's maximum health and is hard to miss on your first visit.
Berries (Berry Picking Quest)
Several berries for the Berry Picking sidequest are hidden throughout Moss Grotto's vegetation. The quest is obtained later in Mosshome (via The Marrow), but the berries can be collected at any time. Look for:
- Sweet berries in the upper canopy areas
- Sour berries near the water pools
- Bitter berries hidden behind moss-covered walls
Maiden's Soul
One of the four souls required for the crucial "Silk and Soul" quest in late-game Act 2/3 progression. The Maiden's Soul is located in a hidden chamber deep within Moss Grotto that becomes accessible only after obtaining advanced movement abilities. This is essential for achieving the true ending.
Wanderer Crest
Accessible through the Chapel of the Wanderer, which connects to Moss Grotto via the Wormways. You'll need to complete the Wormways area first before reaching this chapel. The Wanderer Crest provides valuable combat bonuses.
Moss Grotto Map
The area map can be found relatively early by following the main path through the grotto. It reveals the full layout including hidden rooms marked with question marks.
Boss Encounter: Moss Mother
Moss Mother is the first boss in Hollow Knight: Silksong and serves as the tutorial's climax. This massive moss creature guards the exit leading to Bone Bottom.
Boss Mechanics
Attacks
- Vine whip strikes in a wide arc
- Spore cloud release that creates damage zones
- Root eruptions from the ground
- Body slam creating shockwaves
- Summons Mossgrubs as minions during later phases
Strategy
- This is your introduction to boss combat, so patterns are telegraphed clearly.
- Dodge vine whips by jumping and dashing to the opposite side.
- When Moss Mother releases spores, move to clean air zones.
- Attack during recovery windows after slam attacks.
- Clear Mossgrub minions quickly to avoid being overwhelmed.
- Use the arena's elevated platforms to avoid root eruptions.
Reward
Defeating Moss Mother opens the passage to Bone Bottom, the first village hub where you'll meet NPCs, access shops, and begin accepting sidequests. This is your gateway to the rest of Pharloom.
Environmental Features
Healing Pools
Moss Grotto contains several natural healing pools — shallow water areas surrounded by glowing moss. Standing in these pools slowly restores Hornet's health, teaching new players about environmental healing before they have access to crafted healing items.
Breakable Moss Walls
Many walls in Moss Grotto are covered in cracked moss that can be destroyed with Hornet's needle. These reveal hidden passages containing Rosaries, collectibles, and shortcuts. Always attack suspicious-looking walls.
Luminous Mushrooms
Glowing mushrooms throughout the grotto serve as both visual guides and platforms. Some can be bounced on to reach higher areas, while others illuminate hidden paths in darker sections.
Enemies
Moss Grotto features the gentlest enemies in the game, perfect for learning combat:
- Mossgrubs — Slow-moving grub enemies; your first combat encounter
- Moss Crawlers — Slightly faster than Mossgrubs, patrol set paths
- Spore Floaters — Passive floating enemies that release damaging spores when struck
- Vine Snappers — Stationary plant enemies that bite when Hornet gets close
- Root Worms — Burrow underground and emerge to attack
Secrets and Hidden Areas
Upper Canopy
Above the main path, a series of vine-covered platforms leads to the upper canopy of Moss Grotto. This area contains berries, Rosaries, and a Silk Heart fragment. Reaching it requires basic wall-jumping.
Flooded Depths
Below the main path, a flooded section contains submerged passages. Initially, these are mostly inaccessible, but returning later with swimming-related abilities reveals hidden chambers with lore items.
The Wanderer's Path
A hidden path connecting to the Wormways exists in the northwestern corner of Moss Grotto. This path is locked behind a breakable wall that requires the Needle Strike ability to destroy, making it a mid-to-late game discovery.
Lore Tablets
Several lore tablets are scattered through Moss Grotto, providing backstory about Pharloom and the history of the mossy caverns. These are easy to miss on your first visit but worth reading for the world-building they provide.
Connections to Other Areas
Leads To

Tips for Exploration
- Don't rush through on your first visit — explore every corner for Rosaries and the Silk Heart fragment.
- Attack every moss-covered wall; many hide secret rooms.
- Return after obtaining the Cling Grip (from Shellwood) and Needle Strike (from Blasted Steps) for full completion.
- The Berry Picking quest items in Moss Grotto are easy to grab on a return trip from Bone Bottom.
- The Maiden's Soul is a late-game item — don't worry if you can't find it on early visits.
- Moss Grotto is one of the safest areas to practice new combat techniques and abilities.
Moss Grotto may be the first area you encounter, but its secrets span the entire game. From your humble beginnings fighting Mossgrubs to returning as a fully-powered Hornet to claim the Maiden's Soul, this verdant cavern bookends your journey through Pharloom beautifully.
