Overview
Groal the Great is an optional Act 2 boss in Hollow Knight: Silksong, found in the Bilewater area outside Bilehaven. This imposing creature uses bile-based attacks that create hazardous zones across the arena. As an optional boss, Groal rewards exploration-focused players who venture to the top of Bilewater. The fight is a solid mid-Act 2 challenge that tests your ability to manage arena hazards while dealing consistent damage.

How to Reach Groal the Great
Groal the Great is located at the top of Bilewater, outside Bilehaven:
- Navigate through the Bilewater area — it's accessible during Act 2
- Climb toward the top of Bilewater
- Look for the area just outside Bilehaven at the summit
- Groal the Great's arena is located here
The Bilewater area has its own environmental hazards, so come prepared with adequate health before even reaching the boss.
Attack Patterns
Bile Spray
Groal spews a wide spray of bile across the arena floor. The bile pools persist and deal damage on contact. Jump over the spray and avoid landing in the pools. They dissipate over time, but new ones are created frequently.
Bile Bomb
Groal launches arcing bile projectiles that explode on impact, creating splash damage zones. Watch the trajectory and move away from the impact point. The arc is predictable — step back or dash forward past the landing zone.
Slam
A physical ground slam that sends tremors across the arena floor. Jump to avoid the tremor wave. Groal is briefly vulnerable during the recovery from this attack.
Bile Wave
Groal releases a massive wave of bile that travels across the arena floor. Double jump over it or find elevated ground if available. This attack covers more ground than individual bile bombs.
Gorge (Phase 2)
In Phase 2, Groal begins consuming bile from the arena, powering up his attacks. During Gorge, he's briefly stationary — this is a prime damage window, but be ready for the powered-up attack that follows.
Bile Geyser (Phase 2)
After Gorging, Groal creates bile geysers that erupt from the ground at set positions. The eruption points are marked by bubbling ground. Stay mobile and watch for the telltale bubbles.
Battle Strategy
Platform Management
Like the Widow fight, Groal's battle is about arena control. Bile pools steadily cover the ground, reducing your safe movement area. Stay on clean ground and prioritize positioning over damage output. If the arena gets too covered, be patient — pools dissipate over time.
Elevated Positioning
Whenever possible, use elevated areas or platforms in the arena. Many of Groal's attacks target the ground level. Being above the bile gives you both safety and better angles for downward strikes.
Slam Punish
The Slam is your most reliable damage window. After the tremor wave, Groal has a notable recovery. Jump over the wave and immediately rush in for 3-4 hits. This should be your bread-and-butter punish.
Phase 2: Gorge Timing
When Groal starts Gorging, resist the urge to just stand there hitting him. Yes, he's stationary, but you need to balance damage with preparing for the powered-up follow-up attack. Get your hits in, then create distance before the Gorge completes.
Bile Geyser Awareness
Watch the ground constantly during Phase 2. Bubbling patches mark geyser locations. As long as you keep moving and avoid the bubbles, the geysers won't catch you. Standing still is the worst thing you can do.
