How Builds Work in Silksong
Unlike Hollow Knight's Charm and Notch system, Silksong uses a Crest and Tool system for character customization. Here's how it works:
- Crests are equippable loadout frames, each with a fixed set of colored slots (Red, Blue, Yellow, and White)
- Tools are slotted into matching Crest slots to build your kit
- Red Tools are active abilities (projectiles, traps, summons)
- Blue Tools provide passive defensive benefits
- Yellow Tools offer passive utility and exploration bonuses
- White slots hold Silk Skills (Weaver techniques)

You can only equip one Crest at a time, and each Crest has a different slot configuration. This means your build is largely defined by which Crest you choose, then optimized by which Tools you slot in.
There are 51 Tools and 6 Crests in the game, giving you enormous build variety. Below are the best combinations for every playstyle.
S-Tier Tools (Use These in Every Build)
Before diving into specific builds, these Tools are universally powerful and fit into almost any loadout:
| Tool | Color | Effect | Why It's S-Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetite Dice | Red | Multi-hit projectile | Incredible damage per use, great scaling |
| Cogfly | Red | Summoned companion attacks nearby enemies | Set-and-forget damage, works everywhere |
| Longclaw | Red | Extended melee range | More safe hits, synergizes with everything |
| Pollip Pouch | Red | Poison trap | Passive damage, works on all bosses |
| Fractured Mask | Blue | Survive one extra hit | Essentially extra HP — always useful |
| Claw Mirror | Blue | Damaging flash when Binding | Free damage every time you heal |
| Multibinder | Blue | Double Bind effect | Two heals for the price of one |
| Injector | Blue | Bonus effect on Bind | Synergizes with Claw Mirror + Multibinder |
| Spool Extender | Yellow | Increased Silk capacity | More heals, more Skill uses |
| Compass | Yellow | Shows position on map | Essential for navigation |
| Flea Brew | Yellow | Increased movement/attack speed | Makes everything faster and smoother |
Build 1: Speed Demon (Speedrun Build)
Best For: Speedrunning, fast clears, experienced players
Crest: Wanderer Crest (downward slash Pogo, extra mobility)
| Slot | Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Longclaw | Extended range for quick kills |
| Red | Cogfly | Passive damage while you run |
| Blue | Fractured Mask | Insurance against mistakes |
| Yellow | Flea Brew | Speed boost to everything |
| White | Sharpdart | Fast dash-through-enemies skill |
How to Play
The Speed Demon build prioritizes movement speed and quick enemy dispatch. Flea Brew increases your attack and movement speed, while Longclaw lets you kill enemies from further away without stopping. Cogfly handles stragglers you dash past. Use Sharpdart to blast through enemy clusters without slowing down.
Key Synergy: Flea Brew + Longclaw lets you one-tap most regular enemies while maintaining full running speed.
When to Use: Any% speedruns, NG+ playthroughs, or when you're backtracking through cleared areas.
Build 2: Silk Weaver (Maximum Silk Build)
Best For: Boss fights that require heavy healing, Silk Skill spam
Crest: Hunter Crest (balanced slots)
| Slot | Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Silkshot | Silk-powered ranged attack |
| Blue | Claw Mirror | Damage flash on every Bind |
| Blue | Multibinder | Double Bind for double healing |
| Blue | Injector | Bonus damage on Bind activation |
| Yellow | Spool Extender | More maximum Silk |
| White | Rune Rage | High-damage Silk Skill |
How to Play
This build revolves entirely around Silk management. Attack enemies to build Silk, then use it for both healing (Bind) and dealing massive damage through Silk Skills. The Claw Mirror + Multibinder + Injector combo means every time you Bind, you heal twice and deal significant damage to nearby enemies.
Key Synergy: Multibinder + Claw Mirror procs Claw Mirror twice per Bind, dealing double burst damage. Add Injector for even more value from each Bind.
When to Use: First Sinner, Grand Mother Silk, Lost Lace — any fight where survival matters more than speed.
Build 3: Glass Cannon (Maximum Damage)
Best For: Experienced players who can dodge consistently, boss rush challenges
Crest: Reaper Crest (heavy Red slot focus)
| Slot | Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Magnetite Dice | Highest damage projectile |
| Red | Tacks | Ground hazard traps |
| Red | Pollip Pouch | Passive poison damage |
| Red | Cogwork Wheel | Multi-hit line damage |
| Blue | Barbed Bracelet | +Damage dealt, +damage taken |
| Yellow | Weighted Belt | No knockback on attacks |
| White | Silkspear | Powerful thrown needle |
How to Play
All-out offense. Barbed Bracelet increases both your damage output AND damage taken, so this build requires clean play. Lay Tacks and Pollip Pouch at the boss's landing spots, throw Magnetite Dice and Cogwork Wheels during openings, and use Silkspear for big burst damage when the boss is staggered.
Key Synergy: Barbed Bracelet + Weighted Belt lets you stand in melee range, take no knockback, and deal maximum damage per second. Extremely risky, extremely rewarding.
When to Use: When you've already mastered a boss's patterns and want to cut kill times.
Build 4: Iron Shell (Tank Build)
Best For: New players, first-time boss attempts, survivability
Crest: Beast Crest (heavy Blue slot focus)
| Slot | Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Sting Shard | Safe spacing tool |
| Blue | Fractured Mask | Survive one extra mask of damage |
| Blue | Druid's Eye | Gain Silk when taking damage |
| Blue | Warding Bell | Temporary invulnerability |
| Blue | Memory Crystal | Retaliatory damage on hit |
| Yellow | Spool Extender | More Silk for healing |
| White | Cross Stitch | Parry and counter |
How to Play
The Iron Shell build is all about staying alive. Fractured Mask gives you an extra hit, Druid's Eye gives you Silk when you do get hit (so you can heal it back), Warding Bell provides invulnerability windows, and Memory Crystal punishes enemies for hitting you. Combined with the Spool Extender for extra healing capacity, you become incredibly durable.
Key Synergy: Druid's Eye + Spool Extender means every time you take damage, you gain Silk that can be immediately used to heal back the damage. You essentially have regenerating health.
When to Use: First attempts at any difficult boss, Steel Soul mode, Cogwork Dancers, any fight where you're learning patterns.
Build 5: Explorer's Kit (Exploration Build)
Best For: 100% completion runs, finding secrets, comfortable exploration
Crest: Wanderer Crest (exploration-focused)
| Slot | Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Curveclaw | Ranged enemy clear |
| Blue | Fractured Mask | Safety net |
| Yellow | Compass | Map position tracking |
| Yellow | Magnetite Brooch | Auto-collect Rosaries |
| Yellow | Dead Bug's Purse | Keep Rosaries on death |
| Yellow | Ascendant's Grip | Hold wall-cling position |
| White | Thread Storm | Area-of-effect clear |
How to Play
The Explorer's Kit maximizes your quality of life while exploring. Compass is non-negotiable for navigation. Magnetite Brooch auto-collects currency so you don't miss drops. Dead Bug's Purse means you don't lose everything if you die to an unexpected hazard. Ascendant's Grip lets you rest on walls indefinitely, which is invaluable for surveying rooms before committing.
Key Synergy: Magnetite Brooch + Dead Bug's Purse means you passively accumulate wealth with minimal risk. Ascendant's Grip + Compass together make navigation effortless.
When to Use: First playthrough exploration, 100% completion runs, whenever you're entering a new area for the first time.
Build 6: Bind Master (Healing-Combat Hybrid)
Best For: Aggressive players who heal often mid-combat
Crest: Hunter Crest
| Slot | Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Longclaw | Safe melee hits to generate Silk |
| Blue | Claw Mirror | Damage burst on Bind |
| Blue | Multibinder | Double Bind |
| Blue | Injector | Bonus Bind effect |
| Yellow | Spool Extender | Max Silk capacity |
| White | Cross Stitch | Parry into Bind windows |
How to Play
This is the Silk Weaver build refined for combat flow. The core loop is: attack with Longclaw to generate Silk → parry with Cross Stitch for openings → Bind in mid-air for healing + Claw Mirror damage + Injector damage. You're dealing damage every time you heal.
Key Synergy: The triple combo of Claw Mirror + Multibinder + Injector turns healing into a damage rotation. Longclaw generates Silk faster because you can attack from safer range.

Tips for Optimizing Your Build
-
Always swap builds at Benches — You can only change your Crest and Tools at a Bench, so plan ahead before boss fights.
-
Upgrade your Crafting Kit — Crafting Kit upgrades increase the power of your Tools. Prioritize these upgrades for your most-used Tools.
-
Expand your Tool Pouch — Tool Pouch upgrades let you equip more Tools per Crest slot category. More tools = more options.
-
Test builds in safe areas — Before a boss, try your loadout against regular enemies to make sure the flow feels right.
-
Don't neglect Shell Shards — Shell Shards are used for crafting and upgrades. Farm them in The Marrow or Underworks.
-
Match Skills to builds — Your White slot (Silk Skill) should complement your playstyle. Cross Stitch for defensive builds, Silkspear for offensive, Sharpdart for speed.
