Tools System Overview
In Hollow Knight: Silksong, Tools replace the Charm system from the original Hollow Knight. There are 51 Tools in total, divided into four color-coded slot categories that correspond to your equipped Crest.

Unlike Charms, Tools are more action-oriented — many are consumable or have active effects rather than purely passive bonuses. Your Crest determines how many slots of each color you have available, making Crest choice and Tool loadout deeply interconnected.
Slot Types Explained
| Slot Color | Type | Function |
|---|---|---|
| White | Abilities | Passive effects and movement upgrades |
| Red | Throwables | Consumable ranged attacks and bombs |
| Blue | Wards | Defensive tools and shields |
| Yellow | Devices | Utility gadgets and traps |
White Slot Tools (Abilities)
White slot tools provide passive bonuses and movement enhancements. These are the closest equivalent to traditional Hollow Knight Charms.
Cartographer's Quill
Location: Purchase from Shakra in Bone Bottom (150 Rosaries) Effect: Automatically fills in map details as you explore new rooms. Essential for completionists aiming for 100% map coverage.
Magnetite Brooch
Location: Purchase from shop in Bone Bottom (200 Rosaries) Effect: Rosary beads are magnetized toward Hornet after defeating enemies. Extremely useful for farming and general play — one of the first tools you should buy.
Weighted Belt
Location: Found in Greymoor, hidden room near the Chapel of the Reaper Effect: Eliminates knockback when striking enemies. Useful for aggressive playstyles but requires adjusting to the lack of recoil near hazards.
Gossamer Cloak
Location: Coral Forest, behind a breakable wall after obtaining the Dash ability Effect: Extends dash distance and adds brief invincibility frames. One of the strongest movement tools in the game.
Silk Spinner
Location: Reward from completing the Weaver's quest in Lace's Domain Effect: Passively generates Silk over time. Pairs wonderfully with the Reaper Crest for maximum Silk generation.
Compass Pin
Location: Purchase from Shakra (60 Rosaries) Effect: Shows Hornet's position on the map. A quality-of-life essential for navigation.
Hunter's Mark
Location: Dropped by the Gilded Hunter boss in The Marrow Effect: Reveals enemy health bars and increases damage against previously defeated enemy types.
Red Slot Tools (Throwables)
Red slot tools are consumable projectiles that replenish when resting at a Bench. They add ranged options to Hornet's primarily melee-focused combat.
Throwing Daggers
Location: Starting equipment with Hunter Crest Effect: Quick, low-damage ranged attack. Carries 6 charges. Fast throw animation makes these excellent for finishing low-health enemies.
Fire Bombs
Location: Found in Blasted Steps, inside a hidden alcove behind destructible terrain Effect: Area-of-effect fire damage. Carries 3 charges. Leaves a burning patch on the ground that damages enemies walking through it.
Binding Bolts
Location: Purchase from the Merchant in Deep Docks (300 Rosaries) Effect: Temporarily stuns enemies on hit. Carries 4 charges. Invaluable against fast-moving bosses for creating attack windows.
Poison Needles
Location: Reward from the Mosskin Herbalist quest in Moss Grotto Effect: Applies damage-over-time poison. Carries 5 charges. Particularly effective against bosses with high health pools.
Blast Shells
Location: Found in The Marrow, requires Claw ability to reach Effect: Explodes on impact dealing massive damage. Carries 2 charges. Highest single-hit damage of any throwable.
Blue Slot Tools (Wards)
Blue slot tools provide defensive capabilities, shields, and protective effects.
Silk Barrier
Location: Automatically obtained during the Bind tutorial in Moss Grotto Effect: Creates a temporary shield that absorbs one hit. 10-second cooldown after activation.
Thorn Ward
Location: Found in Greymoor cemetery area, behind a locked gate (requires Simple Key) Effect: When hit, releases thorns in all directions dealing damage to nearby enemies. Excellent for crowd control.
Healing Cocoon
Location: Purchase from the Bone Bottom merchant (400 Rosaries) Effect: Slowly regenerates health while standing still. Pairs well with safe spots during boss fights.
Mirror Ward
Location: Found in the Citadel of Bells, secret room behind the second bell Effect: Reflects projectiles back at enemies. Essential for certain late-game bosses that rely on ranged attacks.
Silk Shield
Location: Reward from Lace after the third encounter Effect: Converts Silk into a frontal shield that blocks all damage for 2 seconds. Costs 3 Silk per use.
Yellow Slot Tools (Devices)
Yellow slot tools provide utility effects including traps, beacons, and environmental manipulation.
Bellway Beacon
Location: Automatically obtained when unlocking the Bellway system Effect: Creates a temporary fast-travel point that lasts until you rest at a Bench. Useful for deep exploration runs.
Silk Trap
Location: Found in Wormways, in the upper-left section near the Ventrica Station Effect: Places a trap on the ground that immobilizes enemies for 3 seconds. Carries 3 charges.
Lure Lantern
Location: Deep Docks, requires completing the Lighthouse keeper's quest Effect: Attracts nearby enemies toward the lantern's position. Excellent for grouping enemies for AoE attacks.
Wire Snare
Location: Found in Hunter's March, behind a breakable wall Effect: Creates a trip-wire between two surfaces that damages and slows enemies passing through.
Clock Beetle
Location: Reward from the Clockwork quest chain in the Citadel Effect: Slows time briefly in a small radius. One of the most powerful tools for boss fights. 30-second cooldown.

Tips for Tool Collection
-
Buy Bench Pins and Bellway Pins from Shakra early — knowing where rest points and fast travel stations are makes exploration much easier.
-
Check every suspicious wall — many tools are hidden behind breakable terrain. Strike walls that look slightly different in texture or color.
-
Complete NPC quests — several of the best tools are quest rewards rather than found in the world.
-
Prioritize Magnetite Brooch — this should be your first purchase. The Rosary magnetism saves enormous amounts of time.
-
Memory Lockets unlock extra slots — finding these throughout Pharloom expands your Crest's slot capacity, allowing more complex builds.
-
Switch tools at Benches — don't stick with one loadout. Adapt your tools to the area and challenges ahead.
