Combat Guide in Hollow Knight Silksong

Combat Fundamentals Recap

Before diving into advanced techniques, make sure you've mastered the basics. Hornet's combat in Silksong is faster and more aerial than the Knight's in Hollow Knight. She has a longer attack range, faster movement speed, and access to Silk-based abilities that fundamentally change the flow of combat.

Core Abilities

  • Needle Strike — Primary attack, direction-dependent
  • Pogo — Downward strike that bounces off enemies/objects (varies by Crest)
  • Dash — Quick directional dodge with brief invincibility frames
  • Wall Cling & Jump — Stick to walls and launch off them
  • Bind — Healing ability (hold to channel Silk into health recovery)
  • Silk Skills — Special abilities powered by the Silk meter

Advanced Movement Techniques

Dash Cancel

The most important advanced technique. During almost any action — attacking, landing, even healing — you can cancel the animation with a dash. This dramatically increases your effective speed and safety.

How to execute: Press dash during the recovery frames of any attack. Hornet will immediately dash, canceling the remaining animation.

When to use: After every attack in boss fights. The pattern becomes: Attack → Dash away → Reposition → Attack. This keeps you mobile and hard to hit.

Pogo Chaining

Pogo attacks (downward strikes) can be chained indefinitely on enemies and objects. Each successful pogo resets your aerial state, allowing another jump or dash.

Advanced application: Chain pogos across multiple enemies to cross large gaps or stay airborne during boss fights. Combine with dashes for maximum air control.

Wall Launch Attacks

From a Wall Cling position, you can launch directly into an attack. This is faster than jumping off the wall first, then attacking.

How to execute: While clinging to a wall, press attack + jump simultaneously. Hornet launches off the wall with an immediate strike.

Best for: Bosses with vertical arenas or enemies near walls.

Dive Attack Mastery

The Dive Attack (downward plunge) is one of Hornet's most powerful moves. It deals increased damage and creates a small shockwave on landing.

Timing tip: Initiate the dive at the apex of your jump for maximum falling distance and damage. The shockwave radius increases with fall distance.

Advanced combo: Dive Attack → Dash cancel on landing → Silk Skill → Jump → Pogo chain. This sequence maximizes damage output in a short window.

Silk Skill Advanced Usage

Silk Skills are special abilities fueled by the Silk meter, which fills as you deal damage to enemies. Each Crest provides different Silk Skill options.

Silk Generation Optimization

  • Aggressive play generates more Silk — every hit fills the meter slightly
  • The Reaper Crest generates bonus Silk from all attacks
  • Throwable tools also generate small amounts of Silk on hit
  • Breaking objects generates minimal Silk — focus on enemies

Silk Skill Timing

Don't hoard your Silk. The meter caps out, and unused Silk is wasted potential. Develop a rhythm:

  1. Build Silk through 3-4 attack combos
  2. Spend Silk on a Silk Skill when the meter is 50%+ full
  3. Dash away and repeat

Silk vs. Healing Trade-offs

Silk powers both Silk Skills (offense) and Bind (healing). This creates a constant resource tension:

  • In boss fights you're winning, prioritize Silk Skills for faster kills
  • When struggling, save Silk for Bind healing
  • The Beast Crest's lifesteal Bind is the best compromise — it converts offensive play into healing

Crest-Specific Combat Strategies

Hunter Crest: The Balanced Fighter

Attack pattern: Standard lethal strikes with diagonal pogo Playstyle: Mid-range, balanced offense and defense

Advanced tip: The Hunter Crest's diagonal pogo can hit enemies that horizontal attacks miss. Use it against enemies with low hitboxes or those slightly above you.

Reaper Crest: The Silk Engine

Attack pattern: Heavy arcing slashes with slow pogo Playstyle: Slower but higher damage per hit, maximum Silk generation

Advanced tip: The Reaper's heavy attacks have wider hitboxes than they appear. You can hit enemies slightly behind Hornet with the arc. The extra Silk generation means you can use Silk Skills almost twice as often as other Crests.

Weakness: Slow attack speed leaves you vulnerable. Always dash cancel after attacks.

Wanderer Crest: The Speed Demon

Attack pattern: Swift precise strikes with fast pogo (most similar to Hollow Knight) Playstyle: Fast, aggressive, pogo-focused aerial combat

Advanced tip: The Wanderer's fast pogo is identical to Hollow Knight's downward strike timing. Veterans of the first game will feel immediately at home. Chain pogos more aggressively with this Crest — the fast recovery time means you can pogo almost indefinitely.

Best for: Speedrunning and players who mastered pogo play in Hollow Knight.

Beast Crest: The Berserker

Attack pattern: Savage slashes with diagonal rolling pogo Playstyle: Ultra-aggressive with lifesteal healing

Advanced tip: The Beast Crest's Bind converts healing into a temporary lifesteal effect instead of standing still to heal. This means you heal by attacking — perfect for aggressive players who hate stopping to Bind.

Advanced combo: Activate Bind → Dive Attack into enemies → Pogo chain → Every hit restores health. This turns you into an unstoppable offensive force during the lifesteal window.

Boss Fight Strategies

Reading Attack Patterns

Every boss in Silksong has telegraph animations before their attacks. Learning to read these is more important than memorizing combos:

  • Wind-up animations — Most attacks have a 0.3-0.5 second tell
  • Audio cues — Many bosses have unique sounds before specific attacks
  • Position-based attacks — Bosses often use different moves depending on your position relative to them

The Safe Hit Window

After most boss attacks, there's a recovery window where the boss is vulnerable. This is your attack opportunity:

  1. Dodge the attack (dash or jump)
  2. Close distance during recovery frames
  3. Land 1-2 hits maximum
  4. Dash away before the next attack begins

Common mistake: Getting greedy with attacks. Two safe hits are better than three hits where the third gets you damaged.

Hitless Boss Strategy

For the "Untouchable" achievement, focus entirely on defense first:

  1. Enter the fight and don't attack at all for the first minute
  2. Learn every attack pattern and its dodge timing
  3. Identify the 2-3 safest punish windows
  4. Only then start attacking, using only those safe windows
  5. Accept that the fight will take longer — patience wins hitless runs

Using Tools in Boss Fights

  • Throwing Daggers — Safe chip damage during dodge sequences
  • Binding Bolts — Create stun windows for 2-3 free hits
  • Clock Beetle — Slow time for easy dodge windows (30-second cooldown)
  • Silk Barrier — Emergency hit absorption for mistakes

Practice Recommendations

  1. Start with the Colosseum — Trial 1 is a perfect practice arena for chaining techniques against varied enemies.

  2. Use the Wanderer Crest if you're struggling — its fast attacks are the most forgiving for learning timing.

  3. Practice dash canceling until it's automatic — this single technique improves every aspect of your combat.

  4. Record and review boss attempts — many players find they make the same mistake repeatedly without realizing it.

  5. Master one Crest before switching — understanding one playstyle deeply is better than knowing all four superficially.
